Film: "Tideland," dir. by Terry Gilliam
Winifred Moore Auditorium @ Webster University, 470 E. Lockwood Ave.
$6, 7 p.m., 314-968-7487, www.webster.edu/filmseries.html
I remember seeing director Terry Gilliam's acclaimed film "Brazil" when I was maybe 13 years old, in a children's program (a.k.a. keep those beasts occupied while Mom and Dad play tennis and sunbathe) in Destin, Florida, with my younger cousin. Needless to say, we were both too young and it freaked us out.
But that won't stop me, and shouldn't stop you, from giving Gilliam another chance, for his latest effort, "Tideland," the tale of young Jeliza-Rose, child of strung-out drug addicts who spends a lot of time fending for herself and whiling away the hours in her own imagination. Sounds like vintage Gilliam to me...especially the apart about her toy doll-heads (yeah, no bodies, just heads) who keep her company.

Bicycle Swap Meet & Classic Bike Show
Gateway Center in Collinsville, IL
$5.50 adults/free kids 12 and under, all ages, noon-3:30 p.m., 636-271-2600, dan@stlmusclebikes.com
As any cyclist will tell you, the best time to plan ahead about all that riding you're going to do when the conditions are ideal is now, when iffy weather/cold/busy schedules make them non-ideal. Here's our little secret, too: now's the time to get a steal on someone else's old bike, cycling gear or other stuff they're too busy to love properly now. So, at the St. Louis Bike Fed's 5th annual swap, you can find bikes, sure, but also tons of "bicycle-related" stuff, offered by shops, nonprofits and just plain folks. Heck, maybe you're on the vending end! Bring your stuff on down and enter the new year with a fistful of cash, instead of a dozen old Huffys.
