Thursday, May 3
New Roots Urban Farm Benefit Dinner
Riddles Penultimate Café & Wine Bar, 6307 Delmar
$50 one/$85 two, 6 p.m., 314-664-8551, newrootscsa@riseup.net

You know something's kinda rotten in Denmark when there are acres and acres of farmable land within spittin' distance of a metropolitan downtown...but that's a story for another day. We're just glad somebody's making good use of the space, and we have a major soft spot for the mighty farmers at New Roots. (What can I say? They let me touch their chicken.) So, come to Riddles tonight and get your grub on — including some tasty inclusions like New Roots greens and chèvre — to benefit the great programs and outreach they're doing in north city and beyond. A silent auction, beginning at 6:30, includes private yoga lessons, rent-a-farmer and much more.

SLSO Variety Night
Lucas Schoolhouse, 1264 Gravois (@ Allen) in Soulard
Free, 7-8:30 p.m., 314-621-6565, www.slso.org

Trippy, dude: a cadre of musicians from the Saint Louis Symphony Orchestra has wandered out of Powell Hall and migrated to our town's latest and greatest venue for a free evening of classic, folk, bluegrass and world music, "including Purple Haze," the poster takes care to point out. Could be psychedelic, will be fun.

Wednesday, May 16
Benefit Concert for Mullanphy Emigrant Home
Christ Church Cathedral, 1210 Locust St., downtown
$20 advance/$25 door, all ages, 7:30 p.m. (doors at 7), 314-241-5031, newoldnorth.blogspot.com

For all the good things happening in Old North St. Louis, the recent troubles surrounding the deteriorating Mullanphy Emigrant Home (a rare and tangible reminder of some of St. Louis' most important history) have been a bummer. So, we can wallow in our sorrows and watch the walls continue to crumble, or...rock out for the cause of its preservation. Well, "rocking out" might be a bit of a stretch, but you'll for sure be tapping your toes to the traditional folk and old-time tunes of Lydia Ruffin (a particular favorite of TheCommonspace) and The Flying Mules at tonight's benefit. It could hardly be easier to be a civic do-gooder.
